Douglas County football formally got under way Monday with the start of Pop Warner practices.

Teams are practicing from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Stodick Park, all in preparation for the kickoff of the Sagebrush Empire regular season on the weekend of Sept. 14-15. The Douglas teams are also scheduled to participate in the league preseason jamboree on Aug. 29 in Fallon.

Players in the 11-, 12- and 13-year old range (seventh and eighth graders) are still needed for the Unlimited division team.

“We have 23 players right now, but we can take up to 35,” said Douglas Pop Warner Commissioner of Football Mike Dillon, who also coaches the Unlimited team.

Interested persons may call Dillon at 775-691-3388 for registration information.

Dillon also noted that the Douglas program is entering its second season of involvement with USA Heads Up Football. The program’s purpose is “to advance player safety in the game of football,” according to the usafootball.com website.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest training is just one of the safety issues addressed by the program. Dillon said an automated external defibrillator is always on the field during Pop Warner practices, games and other activities.

“All of our coaches have or will be going through the training program,” Dillon said. “It’s a little scary on the side. You never know what could happen, but we’re doing what we can to make the game safer for kids to come out and play, and to play for a long time.”

Sagebrush Empire Pop Warner also offers cheerleading for ages 5-15 year olds and we have competitions at the State, Regional and National level for the higher divisions.
