Pop Warner cheer teams Florida-bound
Walt Disney World is the next destination for the Douglas Pop Warner Varsity and Junior Pee Wee cheerleaders, who stepped forward with first- and second-place performances in their respective divisions on Saturday at the Pacific Northwest Regional Championships in San Jose, Calif.
The Tigers Varsity squad won its medium sized division and the Junior Wee squad captured second-place in its division during competition held at San Jose State University’s Yoshihiro Uchida Hall.
Teams from Northern California, Nevada and Washington provided spirit and energy as teams delivered their performance with hopes of earning a top-two finish that would allow them to qualify to compete on the national Pop Warner stage at Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
To start out, the Douglas Varsity cheerleaders were declared champions in their division as Varsity.
Coach Tasha Hamilton said of the team’s performance: “I could not be prouder of the accomplishments this team has made this year. I do believe that keeping with the core values of Douglas Pop Warner is the key in the success for the girls and even myself as a coach.”
The Junior Pee Wee cheerleaders competed later in the day and placed second in their division to earn a trip to Orlando.
Coach Kelly White said of the team: “I have watched this squad grow in size and ability for the past three seasons, from spirit award winners their first year as Mitey Mites to Sagebrush champions this year as Jr. Pee Wees. I really couldn’t be prouder. They now have an amazing opportunity to travel to Florida for nationals. This is a first plane ride for some. Be part of something amazing and support their team.”
Both teams are now raising funds in the community to assist in preparation for their trip to Orlando.
