Pony Express on Bike tour
The Nevada Pony Express Territory and the Nevada Commission on Tourism invites bicycling enthusiasts to relive the adventures of the Wild West and retrace the trail of the Pony Express on One Awesome Tour Bike Ride Across Nevada (OATBRAN), Sept. 20-26.
For road bikers who enjoy the challenge of endurance-style rides, OATBRAN – America’s Loneliest Bike Tour is the ideal bicycling adventure. This fully supported bicycle tour starts at Lake Tahoe and parallels the trail of the Pony Express as it rides west to east across Nevada on U.S. Highway 50, named by Life Magazine as “the loneliest road in America.”
The seventh annual tour will promote SPIN, “Safe Pedaling in Nevada,” a bicycle safety education program designed for elementary school children in each of the host communities.
Participants will be treated to a variety of healthy meals prepared and served by various youth organizations, senior citizens groups, community service and other non-profit organizations in each of the host communities. Full support including rest, water and lunch stops are offered daily and showers are provided at each overnight campsite. All gear is transported for participants so each bike rider can travel light.
OATBRAN is not for beginner bicyclists. Participants should be well-conditioned to challenge the five-day, 428-mile route with nearly 17,000 vertical feet of climbing. As a tour, riders will bicycle at their own pace and SAG pick-up vehicles will be provided should it be necessary. Technical support, which includes bike repair service, is also provided along with medical support, if necessary.
The fee to participate in OATBRAN is $495 per person and includes one night hotel accommodations and five nights of camping with showers, vehicle parking at Lake Tahoe for the week, transporting all gear, 17 meals, a souvenir OATBRAN cycling jersey, an OATBRAN Pony Express mail pouch with postcards from each host community, an “I Survived” America’s Loneliest Bike Tour T-shirt upon completion of the ride, full SAG and technical support and return transportation. Pre-registration is accepted until noon on Sept. 1, and is limited to 250 participants. Registration fees are $550 per person after Sept. 1, if space is available.
