Pirates win Little League championship

The Carson Valley Little League Pirates capped another championship season Wednesday with an 8-4 victory against the Braves in the Majors Division playoff championship game at Lampe Park.

Aiden Budden and Ty Jackson combined to drive in seven runs to help the Pirates complete a sweep of the regular season and playoff titles for the second straight year. The Pirates ended their season with a 17-1 record, including three wins in the playoffs.

The Braves finished 14-5 — 2-2 in the double elimination playoffs with both losses coming at the hands of the Pirates. The Braves were the only team to defeat the Pirates during the regular season.

Jackson slugged a towering two-run homer in the home half of the first inning to break a 1-1 tie and give the Pirates a lead they never relinquished. Chase Jackson drew a leadoff walk and scored on Budden’s single to left field. Moments later, Ty Jackson hit the first pitch he saw over the left field fence.

The Pirates scored three more runs in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 8-1. Two errors set the stage for Budden, who hit a high drive to right field for a three-run homer.

The Braves answered with three runs in the fifth inning. John Antti lined a leadoff single into left field and scored on Zack Korzeniewski’s single to left. With one out, Ayden Murphy walked and Bryce Bowlen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Korzeniewski scored on a wild pitch and Murphy scored on a fielder’s choice, however, Pirates’ reliever Chase Jackson retired the side on back-to-back strikeouts to leave runners stranded at second and third.

Budden hit 3-for-3 with a home run, double and four RBI. James Hubbard also contributed an RBI double in the third inning for the Pirates, who finished with seven hits.

Antti hit 3-for-3 to lead the Braves’ five-hit attack. Antti singled and scored the game’s first run on a single by Bowlen.

On Tuesday, Bowlen slammed a two-out, two-strike three-run homer to lift the Braves past the Giants 6-4 and into the championship round.

Budden pitched 4.1 innings to earn credit for the win. Jackson struck out four of the eight batters he faced to end the game.

Bowlen started and pitched 4.1 innings for the Braves. The right-hander had seven strikeouts — five straight during one stretch — and issued two walks.
