Pau-Wa-Lu 8th graders take second
The Pau-Wa-Lu 8th grade volleyball team took second-place Saturday at the South Tahoe Optimist Tournament in South Lake Tahoe.
Pau-Wa-Lu posted a 5-1 record during the two-day tournament at South Tahoe Middle School, losing a three-set championship match against Carson Middle School. Carson rallied to win 25-18, 9-25, 14-16.
“The squad played their hearts out,” Pau-Wa-Lu coach Marshall Hamada said. “They played strong as a team. It was truly a hard fought match and tough to see the agony of defeat from these amazing young athletes. Sometimes your best-played match is the one you just lost.”
The Panthers swept past three straight opponents during pool play on Friday — Eagle Valley (25-22, 25-9), South Tahoe-Blue (25-17, 25-20) and Incline (25-15, 16-25, 17-15).
In Saturday’s bracket play, the Panthers defeated South Tahoe-Gold 25-16, 25-17 and then defeated Carson Valley in the semifinals, 25-23, 25-21.
Pau-Wa-Lu travels to South Tahoe for a Tah-Neva League match on Thursday, then plays Eagle Valley on Feb. 4 and Carson Valley on Feb. 6. Carson Middle School will host the Tah-Neva League Tournament on Feb. 11.
