Panthers 7th graders second at Tahoe
Pau-Wa-Lu captured second-place on Saturday at the South Tahoe Optimist 7th Grade Volleyball Tournament held at the Kahle Community Center at Stateline.
The Panthers compiled a 5-1 record during the tournament, losing in the championship match against Incline Middle School in two closely contested sets, 25-20 and 26-24. Incline came in as the defending tournament champion.
Earlier, the Panthers defeated Incline in the semifinals, 25-16, 20-25, 15-9 in what coach Klaus Leitenbauer described as “another intense match.”
Among the statistical highlights for the tournament, Hailey Hughes led the Panthers in kills with 48, while Hannah Kile had 26 and Courtney Fent 17.
Hughes was the team leader in points served with 42, followed by Fent 37, Alexis Gunnell 28, Kile 18, Rebecca Swearingen 16 and Sierra Sullivan 13. Fent also contributed 21 service aces, while Hughes had 18, Gunnell 11, Sullivan 10, Kile 7 and Swearingen 6.
Ivie Tims, Swearingen, Sullivan and Gunnell combined for 69 assists during the tournament.
The Panthers improved their season record to 9-3.
