New Mexico ends CV seniors year

The Carson Valley Senior all-stars were three outs from being in a position of control early this week at the Western Regional tournament in Grand Junction, Colo.

A one-run loss in nine innings to the Arizona state champs on Sunday night changed everything, however.

Carson Valley was eliminated from the tournament Monday with a 14-2 loss to the New Mexico state champs, whom the Douglas County 15- and 16-year-olds had defeated 20-13 in the first round.

“I think the Sunday night’s game took everything out of us,” Carson Valley manager Tim Curtis said. “The team didn’t have much energy left after the nine-inning game Sunday night.

“If we had been fortunate enough to win the Arizona game, with the momentum we had (from winning the state tournament a week earlier in Winnemucca), we could still be playing. Arizona was the team to beat.”

Collin Muren crushed a two-run home run in the sixth inning to produce Carson Valley’s only runs in the elimination game. James Bunting had singled to lead off the sixth and scored ahead of Muren.

New Mexico jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings and kept Carson Valley quiet with solid defensive execution. The New Mexico pitcher faced the minimum through five innings Monday with the help of three double plays.

“(New Mexico) hit the ball very well and, overall, we didn’t play with much intensity,” Curtis said.

Alex Seghieri and Ryan Curtis were the only other Carson Valley players to collect a basehit in the final game.

Andrew Andrews, Ryan Curtis and Collin Muren all took turns on the hill for Carson Valley.

The CV Seniors obviously would have preferred to extend their season by winning the regional tournament and advancing to divisionals, but they can take pride in the fact that they were the first Carson Valley team to win a Senior state championship.

“The team was very happy with their tournament performances,” Tim Curtis said. “Even though the regional tournament ended earlier than we would have liked, we came home happy with what we accomplished.

“Everyone on the team played a role in our success. They really came together in Winnemucca in the state tournament.”
