Staff Reports

Blake Murray and Andrew Williams won championships in their eighth grade weight classes Saturday at the Tahoe-Neva Wrestling Championships in Fallon.

Competing for a Douglas County middle school team, Murray won the 160-pound title and the eighth grade Outstanding Upper Weight Wrestler award. Murray (10-0 this season) pinned two opponents and then pulled out a hard-fought 5-3 decision over Carson’s Abel Carter in the finals.

Andrews won the 95-pound weight class title. Mason Melhus placed second at 125 pounds and Kaya Wilson took fourth-place at 95 pounds.

The Douglas team was comprised of wrestlers representing Carson Valley and Pau-Wa-Lu middle schools.

Douglas also had two individual champions — 120-pounder Nathen Cruz and heavyweight Alex Rice — and finished fourth as a team in the seventh grade division. Sam Whilden placed second at 105 pounds, Chad Singer third at 140 pounds and Jon Sloan fourth at 110 pounds.
