Middle school wrestlers win at tournament

A combined Carson Valley Middle School/Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School wrestling team produced nine individual champions last weekend during a Tah-Neva League tournament in Carson City.

Five of those champions were sixth graders competing in the seventh grade division during competition held at Eagle Valley Middle School, including John Chaline (70-pound weight class), Riley Duran (80-pounds), Romaine T. Smokey IV (90-pounds), Stephen Baugh (100-pounds) and Jace Radelfinger (105-pounds).

Seventh grade champions were Caleb Lewis (145-pounds) and Gabe Foster (165-pounds). And the eighth grade champions were Dominic Jackson (95-pounds) and Nieson Wyatt (heavyweight).

Six other wrestlers advanced to the championship round in their weight classes overall and returned home with second-place finishes. They included Tyler Kauffman (80-pounds), Dean Showley (105-pounds), Jarom Langkilde (110-pounds), Talin Goheen (115-pounds), Fili Cebrero (135-pounds) and Sierra Edwards (145-pounds).

Third-place finishers were Robert Martinez (heavyweight), Haley Estabrook (100-pounds), Max Smith (115-pounds), Yahir Pinea (175-pounds).

Fourth-place finishers were Trevor Burrier (105-pounds) Eduardo Gutierrez (120-pounds), Treyton Ryan (95-pounds), Tyler Smith (120-pounds) and Mariano Herrera (150 pounds).

CVMS will host the next tournament Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. This will be a qualifier for the Tah-Neva Championships on March 18.
