Marchegger, McNeely pace Falcons
Sierra Lutheran High’s Jared Marchegger and Richard McNeely turned in top-10 and personal record performances Saturday in their small schools boys race at the 43rd annual Stanford Invitational.
Marchegger, a sophomore, ran 16:07 for 5,000 meters to take third-place in the Division 5 race while McNeely, a senior, was clocked at 16:19 to provide highlights for the Falcons during competition at Stanford Golf Course.
Senior Tyler Waite also ran 18:47 and Brandon Hall 20:05 in a race that had 167 finishers. Both times were personal bests.
Eli Horwitz, a senior from Stuart Hall (San Francisco), won the race in 15:58.
In the Division 5 girls race, junior Elaina Marchegger finished 18th for Sierra Lutheran. Marchegger, the defending Nevada small schools state champion, ran a personal best 20:07 for 5,000 meters. Clare Davison and Emily McNeely finished 30th and 31st with respective times of 20:35 and 20:40, while Taylor Davison ran 20:58 to finish 41st. The times for all four were personal bests.
Twelve boys and girls high school races were contested during a meet that attracted more than 3,000 runners representing five states and Canada. The meet also featured collegiate races for men and women.
The Falcons run again Friday at the Lowry Invitational in Winnemucca. Meanwhile, Douglas High will send girls and boys teams to the Clovis Invitational Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif.
