Keller leads Tigers past Panthers
Haden Keller overcame a rough start to pitch a complete game and helped his own cause at the plate with four hits in the Douglas High baseball team’s 11-6 victory Saturday against North Valleys.
North Valleys took leads of 3-0, 5-3 and 6-5 in the opening three innings at Tiger Field before Douglas buckled down and rallied for its first Northern 4A conference win of the season.
The Tigers improved to 1-2 in conference (4-4 overall). The Panthers saw their record drop to 1-3 in conference (2-6 overall).
Keller threw 95 pitches over seven innings, allowed two earned runs on nine hits to go with eight strikeouts and no walks. The senior right-hander retired 12 of 13 batters he faced between the third and sixth innings, then ended the game on a swinging strikeout with runners on first and second in the seventh inning.
Keller hit 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Isaiah Schat went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Jayden Foster was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Hayden Brown went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Kindel Isham also hit 2-for-4 with one RBI and Spencer Trivitt 1-for-2 with a double to round out the Tigers’ 13-hit attack.
Douglas had eight stolen bases in the game: Keller with three, Brown and Isham with two each and Foster one.
Douglas scored four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Keller hit an infield single to lead off the rally and scored the tying run on Brown’s single to center field. Brown stole second base and scored on Foster’s RBI double, Riley Wilkinson reached base on an infield error and Tristan Futch walked to load the bases. Schat followed with a two-run single to extend the Douglas lead to 9-6.
The Tigers visited North Valleys on Tuesday and will be back at home on Thursday for an important 3:45 p.m. conference contest against Spanish Springs.
