Junior Pee Wees fall to Griffins at Super Bowl
The Douglas Tiger Pop Warner Junior Pee Wee football team’s dream season came to an end Friday morning in Orlando, Fla.
Once again out-sized at nearly every position on the field, the Tigers lost a hard-fought battle to the Las Alamitos (Calif.) Griffins 16-7 at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex.
“The teams down here really are everything they cracked up to be,” Douglas coach Clay Peterson said. “This truly is a national stage and the kids hung in there against some of the top teams in the country.”
Las Alamitos jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first half, but Douglas put the clamps down on defense and didn’t allow another point for the rest of the game.
The Tigers’ defense had shut out 11 other teams on the year and didn’t allow anyone to score more than 20.
In the second half Friday, Douglas punched in a touchdown but simply couldn’t find any more firepower to close the gap.
“We outplayed them in the second half and that was a good way to go out,” Peterson said. “We had a great time down here and played hard. That’s all you can ask of the kids.”
Douglas lost to Wake Forest (N.C.) 14-0 earlier in the week. Wake Forest went on to claim the national title.
“We faced some tough teams this year and the kids learned a lot,” Peterson said.
The Tigers finished with a 12-2 record with titles in the Sagebrush Empire and Pacific Northwest Region.
