John Munyan takes second in trail race
Gardnerville’s John Munyan finished second overall at the recent Wild Winter Round Up 10-kilometer trail run in Carson City.
Munyan, 16, a Douglas High School junior, finished second overall as he clocked a time of 52 minutes and 2 seconds over a challenging 6.2-mile route held in the hills behind Centennial Park on Jan. 9. Munyan was more than 17 minutes faster than the time he ran to second-place overall in this race in 2015.
Tim Dry of Minden ran to 11th overall and was fourth in the men’s 40-49 age division with a time of 1:02:11.
Gardnerville’s Shambo Rowe and Norah Gastelum finished second and third in the women’s 40-49 age group with respective times of 1:04:00 and 1:04:38.
Sandra Wendel of Gardnerville was the first 60-69 age group finisher in 1:27:12.
Corey Hanson, 39, of Reno was the overall winner in 46:46. He was the Wild Winter Round Up overall winner in 2015 with a time of 1:05:26.
A total of 30 runners finished the race.
Gardnerville’s Benjamin Munyan, 13, captured third overall in the 5-kilometer race with a time of 39:36.
Another Gardnerville runner, Desna Young finished as the first 60-69 age runner with a 48:28 clocking. She finished 13th overall and was the sixth woman to finish.
Reno’s Taylor Samuels, 51, was the overall winner in 26:54. The first woman was Ashleigh Stuart, 30, of Reno in 39:47, followed closely by Dayton’s Cindy Campbell, 53, in 40:05.
A total of 21 runners finished the race.
The Wild Winter Round Up was the third leg in the Ascent Runs Winter Trail Series. Next up is the Love Can be Cold trail run on Feb. 6 at Jacks Valley Elementary School. The event is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start. Visit http://ascentruns.com for more information about the series.
