Sierra Lutheran’s Marchegger wins

Sierra Lutheran High’s Jared Marchegger won the 1A/2A boys race Saturday at the NIAA State Cross Country Championships in North Las Vegas.

Marchegger, a sophomore, ran 16:23 for 5,000 meters to emerge as the gold medalist, four seconds ahead of North Tahoe’s J.C. Schoonmaker in the runner-up spot at Craig Ranch Regional Park. Marchegger finished fourth at last year’s state meet.

Senior Richard McNeely ran 16:41 to place fourth and help Sierra Lutheran finish third as a team with 75 points. North Tahoe scored 46 points to capture its fifth straight team title.

Sierra Lutheran’s girls took second in the girls team race by a 32-37 score behind North Tahoe. This marked the third consecutive state team title for the Lakers’ girls.

Clare Davison placed fourth (20:26), Taylor Davison took fifth (20:40) and Emily McNeely sixth (20:49) to pace the Falcons. Elaina Marchegger took 11th (21:44).
