Special to The R-C

The 12 and under Carson Valley Hot Shots, a traveling team of the Carson Valley Girls Softball Association, started their tournament season recently at the Cinco de Mayo Classic in Reno.

The Hot Shots entered the single-elimination round in third place after winning three of four seeding games on the first day.

In the single-elimination bracket, the girls topped the Chico Stars 14-10 and the Nevada Comets 8-5 to earn a spot in the gold division championship game.

The Hot Shots faced the Lady Aces in the championship, a team who entered the final bracket undefeated in the tournament.

The Carson Valley team struck early, putting up three runs in the first inning, and then opening it up with 13 runs in the second. The Lady Aces could not recover, and the Hot Shots won the title 16-4.

In the big game, Madison Rodgers led her team offensively with two triples, a single and five RBIs. Haley Doughty, Maggie Usher, Madison Rozier (2), Kettja Bennett (2) Chloie Pratt and Jasmine McNinch had singles, and Joie Maki, Doughty (2), Usher (2) Rozier (2), Bennett (2) and McNinch earned RBIs.

Bennett pitched all three games on Sunday. She struck out 15 batters in 11 innings of work.

“What a wonderful way to start the season,” said coach Eddie Doughty. “This team is made of a group of seasoned travel ball players. Most of them have played together before, so they have a solid foundation. We certainly have some areas we can improve on, but we are in an excellent starting position.”

The 12U Hot Shots’ next tournament is Saturday and Sunday in the Nevada Sierra Qualifier in Reno.

The CVGSA is a fastpitch softball league for girls between the ages of 4 and 18. The league offers recreational play in the spring and has tournament teams for athletes looking to play at the competitive level.
