Hillman cycles to third-place
After leading the varsity boys race through two laps last Sunday at the North Tahoe Challenge mountain bike race in Tahoe City, Danner Hillman encountered misfortune on his way to a third-place finish during the Nevada Interscholastic Cycling League’s inaugural event.
Hillman, racing for the Alta Alpina Cycling Club, finished the race at North Tahoe High School in a time of 1 hour, 13 minutes and 25 seconds. The Douglas High School senior held a three-second lead over Austin Smith after the 6.5-mile first lap (550 feet of climbing) and still had an edge at the end of two laps. Then misfortune struck when he experienced a mechanical issue with his seat and was forced to stop for repairs.
Smith, a Galena High School senior, won the race in 1:12:29 and North Tahoe High sophomore Cooper Anderson was second in 1:12:51.
Alta Alpina’s Justin Kinser also placed fourth in the two-lap freshman boys race in 51:53.
William James-Chappell of Sierra Lutheran High placed second in the JV boys race in 1:25:01.
