Granat tops volleyball honors list

by Chuck Smock

Less than one year after undergoing reconstructive surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee, Douglas senior Jessica Granat impressed opposing coaches enough to be named to the Northern 4A All-League first team volleyball squad.

Granat was the Tigers’ lone All-League selection. She was also named to the All-Division II first team for her play at right-side hitter and blocker, which was a new position for her this season.

“Jessica started off the season learning a new position and moving from middle to opposite (right-side),” Douglas coach Dave Myers said. “She worked hard to learn the new position and not let the knee bother her at all.

“I think it was her consistency, match to match, that impressed all the coaches.”

Granat injured her knee during the Tigers’ basketball game with Carson in mid-January. She was told by her doctors that it could take up to a year to rehabilitate the knee, but her hard work and determination enabled her to play club volleyball in May. She’ll start her senior basketball season today, when the Tigers take on Merced at Galena High at 4:30 p.m.

Douglas senior outside hitter Natalie Stratton was voted to the All-Division II second team. Stratton was also one of the Tigers’ strongest defenders and passers, according to Myers.

Tiger senior JK Koenig and junior setter Jamie McCreary received Division II honorable mention recognition.

Fallon’s Jennifer Hucke was named the All-League and All-Division II Player of the Year. Greenwave coach Caryn Marshall picked up the All-League and All-Division II Coach of the Year awards.

Douglas players also picked up individual awards at the 1999 Northern 4A Zone tournament and the NIAA/U.S. Bank State tournament.

Stratton and McCreary were named to the All-Zone tournament team.

Junior Darshaya Mustacchio was voted to the All-State tournament team.

“I was surprised and disappointed more Douglas players were not included on the All-Division and All-League teams,” Myers said. “But it does show that we were a well-balanced team with all of the postseason recognition.”
