Gonzales pins his way to gold

Staff Reports

A young, yet experienced, Sawyer Gonzales pinned his way to three gold medals in his age group during the USA Wrestling State Tournament on March 13-15 in Las Vegas.

Sawyer, an 11-year-old fifth grade student at Minden Elementary School, pinned each of his opponents on his way to winning championships in his heavweight class during three days of Freestyle, Greco-Roman and Folkstyle wrestling. The 159-pounder was competing for the Carson Bulldogs youth wrestling club.

Sawyer, who is in his sixth season of competition on the mat, has compiled a 23-1 record so far in 2015. He won all three divisions (Freestyle, Greco-Roman and Folkstyle) March 7-8 at the North Valleys Predators' Iron Man Tournament in Reno, and before that, took second-place on Feb. 28 at the Rumble in Reno (a Rocky Mountain Nationals event). He was also a winner on Feb. 15 at the St. Valentine's Day Massacre tournament in Vacaville, Calif.

Sawyer's next outing will be a World of Wrestling event on April 10-12 at the Reno Livestock Events Center.
