Golfers survive rough weather, post respectable scores
Members of the Douglas High School boys golf team survived gale-force winds and wind-chill temperatures in the 20s Friday to post respectable scores in a Division II match at Genoa Lakes.
Markus Zinke and Matt Shallenberger shot 83, but the Tigers finished second, six shots behind Carson (424-430).
Also for Douglas, Shane Hennessy-York shot 86, Brandon Goles shot 88 and Jason Doering shot 90. Greg Bodenstein’s 92 was discarded.
Josh Nahm of Carson fired a 3-over par 75 to claim the medalist honor. Teammate Dan Timmons carded an 80 and was the runner-up.
Zinke was up and down and generally all over the place in his round. But, the junior saved some key holes and posted a highly competitive score considering the playing conditions.
How strong was the wind?
Zinke, who started his round on the back side, hit an 8-iron more than 230 yards on the downwind par-4 10th into a fork of the river which cuts across the fairway. He salvaged a 44 on the side when he stuck a sand wedge within 3 feet on the par-5 17th and made the birdie putt.
To make matters worse, Zinke three-putted the par-4 1st from six feet and walked away with a double bogey. He knocked a 5-iron stiff at the par-5 2nd, but saw his birdie putt lip out. He drove the short and downwind par-4 3rd, but he three-putted from 20 feet, including a missed birdie try from three feet.
Zinke said he made good bogeys on the 4th and 5th. He got up and down for par on the 6th.
Zinke missed sinkable birdie putts on the long par-4 7th and par-5 9th holes, but drained a difficult left-to-right breaker for birdie on the treacherous par-3 8th. All in all, it was a solid effort for Zinke, who was a state tournament qualifier last year.
“I hit the ball pretty well for the wind conditions,” Zinke said. “It was hard keeping it (on line).
