Golf: Wurster wins fourth-consecutive tourney
Douglas High senior Bethany Wurster won her fourth tournament of the season in as many tries Monday afternoon, shooting a 4-under 68 at Genoa Lakes as the Tigers took fourth as a team, clinching a spot at the regional tournament.
Wurster carded five birdies and one bogie in posting the win.
“She was pleased with her score,” Douglas coach Steve Gustafson said. “I’m proud of her. Things are looking good as we go into the last two league matches.”
Douglas mapped out a longer course for Monday’s tournament, adding about 300 yards to help prepare for the regional format, which is typically 5,500 yards.
“We came close to 5,300,” Gustafson said. “The scores were great across the board. Although we finished fourth, some of our younger players are showing a lot of improvement.”
Gustafson noted Kristen Greenhut and Kendal Liebowitz in particular, adding that Molly Jordan and Tawnie Wentz had solid days as well.
“Both Kristen and Kendal played in a tournament for the first time this season,” he said.
“They kept the ball in play. Molly keeps playings well and playing consistently. She hasn’t had any blow-up rounds.
“Tawnie Wentz (96), wants to get better and move up in the Nevada Cup standings. She is currently 14th and her goal is to break into the top 12.”
Carson won the tournament, followed by Manogue and Galena.
