Girls track team takes 4th

In the final preview before the Northern 4A Regional Track Championship cycle starts up, the Douglas High girls’ squad put together an impressive effort.
Pitted against the top teams in the region, the Lady Tigers came in fourth as a team behind Reno, Galena and McQueen.
Alicia Sturgess won the 800 and took third in the high jump to lead the Tigers and sophomore Jessica Gorton took second in the long jump with a personal best of 16-7 and third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.2 seconds.
Nicole Mehrer finished second in the triple jump (33-03) while Gorton took third (33-02) and Sarah Hartley took third in the 200 with a time of 28.33 seconds for Douglas.
The Douglas boys’ 4×800 team of Brad Boyd, Seth White, Derrick Jenkins and Spencer Lewis broke the school record with a time of 8:29, taking third overall.
Next up for Douglas is the Sierra League trials at Damonte Ranch this weekend. The regional championships follow the next week, also at Damonte Ranch.

“We’ll see what happens,” Douglas coach Rick Brown said. “You never know who will come through with that performance you’ve been waiting for.”
Among the favorites heading in are Sturgess, who is in the top five in the state in the 800, the girls’ 4×400 team, currently ranked third in the region, and the boys’ 4×800.
