Girls power to 7-1 record

Staff Reports

Michelle Roza’s season-high 12 points and pressure defense helped the Douglas girls’ basketball team to a 47-34 victory against Reseda, Calif., in opening-night action of the Centennial High School Lady Bulldogs Holiday Classic on Monday night.

Douglas held its Los Angeles area opponent to 24 points through three quarters to improve its season record to 7-1.

“Defense is what got us going tonight,” Douglas coach Werner Christen said. “We pressed them and the girls did a real good job overall.”

After taking a 6-4 lead at the end of one quarter, Douglas shook loose by outscoring Reseda 18-11 in the second period. Jessica Granat scored six of her eight points in the second quarter.

Sophomore guard Andrea Honer hit one 3-pointer and finished with nine for the night.

The Tigers played Southern California’s Newport Harbor in the second round Tuesday afternoon.

Douglas improved its record to 6-1 Friday with an overtime victory over Sparks on Friday at DHS.

Honer made two free throws late in the overtime period to help the Tigers defeat the Railroaders, 28-26.

Down by two points late in the extra period, Stephanie Combes made a basket to tie the game at 26-26. The Tigers then came up with a defensive stop and called a timeout, setting up Honer, who was fouled while shooting with 3.9 seconds on the clock.

Christen then allowed his Tigers to burn up their remaining fouls to ensure that Sparks wouldn’t get a shot to try to tie or win the game.

“We had three fouls to give, so even though we only needed only one point (from Honer), two was nice,” Christen said.

Granat had seven rebounds and eight points for the Tigers.
