Girls pound bulldogs
Ashlyn Doak scored 12 points and Amanda Essary finished with eight as the Douglas freshman girls posted a 32-20 win over the Smith Valley junior varsity on Monday at Carson Valley Middle School.
The Tigers opened the game with a 10-4 run and owned a 20-7 lead at halftime.
The win over the Bulldogs followed a 52-32 loss to the Reed Raiders on Thursday.
Melissa Gadsby led the Tigers with 10 points against Reed. Doak scored seven, while Andrea Miller and Essary each scored four points.
“We have shown a lot of improvement over the last two games,” Douglas coach Nathan Tolbert said. “Against Reed, we executed our offense well and we played tough defense, for the most part, but we just didn’t have that spark that you need to beat a good team.
“Against Smith Valley, we tried a different approach. Instead of pushing so much to execute the offense, we let the team play together and have some fun with the game. It worked very well because we played much better as a team. Our transition game was unstoppable and the team as a whole seemed more relaxed.”
The Tigers will compete in the Allstate Tournament, beginning next Wednesday at McQueen High.
