Girls play in Reno Elite 8

Douglas High School is part of a quality field of girls basketball teams that has been assembled to play in the Elite 8 Shootout this weekened at Reno High School.

The tournament begins Thursday and continues through Saturday featuring four of northern Nevada’s top four programs competing along with four from the Sacramento area.

Douglas, last season’s Nevada 4A state tournament runner-up, opens with a 3 p.m. game against Forest Lake Christian (Auburn, Calif.). Forest Lake Christian went 27-2 last season, winning 26 games in a row before falling to high-powered Modesto Christian in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division V Tournament semifinals. The team is 4-0 this season after taking the championship of its own Lady Falcon Classic over the weekend, capped by a 55-38 win in the finals over Newark Memorial from the Bay area.

Douglas won its season opener last week at home against Reed, 72-68.

Other teams in the Elite 8 include McQueen, 4A state champions between 1996 and 1999, Galena, the 2000 state champion in 2000, and host Reno, the state champion in 2001. Bear River, Oak Ridge from El Dorado Hills and Cordova are the California entries in the tournament.
