Girls’ basketball: Douglas wins defensive battle against Windsor

Even in a game where the Douglas High girls’ basketball team couldn’t really fall into any sort of rhythm on offense, the Lady Tigers still found a way to pull out the win.

Brittany Puzey hit a baseline jumper with less than 30 seconds left for what proved to be the game-winning shot in a 39-37 win over Windsor, Calif., at the West Coast Showcase at Reno High Thursday night.

Jessie Kizer hit a game-tying shot on the previous trip down the floor, and Monica Knight grabbed a crucial rebound on Windsor’s ensuing posession which set up Puzey’s winning shot.

The Tigers held off two Windsor trips down the floor and the Jaguars’ Megan Langhals had a shot bounce out at the buzzer giving the Tigers the win.

“Offensively, we didn’t do bad things tonight,” Douglas head coach Werner Christen said. “The movement was O.K. and we are getting better at setting our screens. We just have to finish and that will come. We knew our defense was going to have to carry us early on this year.”

Windsor jumped out to a 13-12 lead in the first quarter, but a 3-pointer by Kizer to close out the first and another 3-pointers to open the second put Douglas out front.

Douglas’ Tammy Gough, playing against her former school in Windsor, then hit a 3-pointer and another jumper on consecutive trips down the floor.

Both teams’ defenses clamped down after that. The two teams combined for only 27 points in the second half and often went for long periods of time without any scoring at all.

“It’s a good sign when you don’t shoot well and you can still pull out the win,” Christen said. “Jessie Kizer had a great game tonight. She hit some big shots and did the little things well. Our top scorers weren’t having the best nights, but it says a lot about our depth to be able to win this game.

Puzey led the Tigers with 12 points, Erin Brinkmeyer had nine and Kizer finished with eight.

“We missed a lot of wide-open layups tonight and we didn’t do so well at the free throw line,” Christen said. “Our defense got things done tonight.”
