Galena girls soccer tops Tigers, 1-0
Heather Huene’s unassisted goal was the difference Saturday when Galena edged Douglas 1-0 during a matchup of Sierra League girls soccer rivals in Reno.
Galena (13-2 league, 15-3 overall) took its 1-0 lead about 15 minutes into the first half when Huene, a senior, scored her 18th goal of the season. The Grizzlies were 2-1 winners at Douglas on Oct. 4.
For Douglas (9-5-1, 10-6-1), the loss was its fourth in five games. Of those five games, four have been decided by 1-0 scores and the fifth was 2-0. The Tigers have only allowed five goals in those five games.
“Our defense has been great,” coach Werner Christen said. “We’ve only scored one goal in the last 400 minutes, but at the same time, we’ve only given up five goals in 400 minutes.”
The coach went on to praise the defensive play of Sydney Woodward and Payson Coverley on Saturday.
The Tigers begin play in the Northern 4A Region Tournament next Tuesday against the High Desert League’s No. 2 seed, McQueen (10-4-1). The Tigers posted a 2-0 win at McQueen on Aug. 30.
Douglas (14-0-1) played Galena to a 1-1 tie on Saturday. The JV Tigers close out their season Tuesday afternoon at home against Carson.
