Freeman returns to Valley

by Donnie Nelson

She’s back.

Janelle Freeman has returned to the area and is once again the head professional at Carson Valley Golf Course.

Freeman, 40, served as the head pro from 1991-1995 before getting out of the golf business to have a child. She spent time after the birth of her son traveling around the midwest with her husband, but is now happy to be home.

“I love the west coast. I love the weather here,” Freeman said. “I left the first time when I had some personal problems, but (the co-owners) were gracious enough to let me come back. This is where I want to be.”

Freeman will be in charge of the pro shop, putting on tournaments and the course’s general operations.

Freeman is the only teaching pro at Carson Valley. She said her clientele, mostly juniors, women and seniors who are beginning to take up the game, is growing quickly now that word has spread about her return.

Freeman said she focuses her lessons not just on how to hit the ball, but how to act around the golf course. She likes to give lessons in a series and take the player out to play a few holes at the end.

Perhaps the biggest challenges facing Freeman and the course will be staying busy after two new courses in the Valley open in June and getting the course back to great shape after the great flood of last year. Freeman said she isn’t too concerned about the new competition and believes the course will be back in great shape soon.

“A lot of people like our course because you can still walk it,” Freeman said. “I believe people like to play different course and not the same one over and over. We will keep our fee respectful.

“The course is looking great. In five weeks, it will be in great shape. The rain has helped immensely.”

One of Freeman’s goals is to re-establish a junior program. In 1994, she had 60 kids involved. She would like to get it going that strongly again and would like to have help from parents.
