Foster contributes for Pack,Sargent hurls three shutouts
Here is a breakdown on some Carson Valley athletes who have graduated from high school and now compete in college:
KALEB FOSTER — University of Nevada, 2015 Douglas graduate: The freshman catcher hit 1-for-1 with a double for the Wolf Pack Saturday in a 5-1 win over St. John’s at Peccole Park in Reno. On Friday, Foster was 1-for-3 and hit an RBI double down the left field line during a three-run sixth inning in the Wolf Pack’s 12-1 win over St. John’s. Foster now has three doubles for the season.
CODY BEGOVICH — Northeastern State University (Tahlequah, Okla.), 2012 Douglas High School graduate: Begovich hit a solo home run in the third inning to help the RiverHawks to a 6-4 win Saturday at Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo. Begovich also hit 2-for-5 on Tuesday in a 13-12 win at home against Pittsburg State. For the season, Begovich is hitting .282 through 23 games with nine homers, 32 RBI and a .671 slugging percentage.
KALI SARGENT — Sacramento City College, 2015 Douglas graduate: Sargent had a big week as she pitched three shutouts over a span of five days. Coming off a 5-0 win at Diablo Valley College on March 15, Sargent hurled a four-hitter to beat American River College 5-0 two days later in a key Big 8 Conference contest. On Saturday, Sargent pitched a one-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks to blank Modesto Junior College 6-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. The Panthers swept the twin-bill at Modesto to improve their conference record to 5-0 (17-4-1 overall). Sargent also hit 2-for-3 in Saturday’s opener and then went 3-for-5 with two RBI in the Panthers’ 18-0 win in the second game.
LEONNA MORTIMER — Lassen College (Susanville, Calif.), 2015 Douglas graduate: Mortimer hit a two-run homer to give Lassen an early lead and pitched seven-hit ball over six innings Saturday in a 6-4 win in the opener of a doubleheader at Butte College. Mortimer finished with two strikeouts and no walks. She also went 1-for-4 with a double to help Lassen win the second game, 4-2.
TRACK AND FIELD
COLTON WAGGONER — Yuba College (Yuba City, Calif.), 2014 Douglas graduate: Waggoner placed third in the men’s discus at Sacramento State’s Hornet Invitational Saturday with a lifetime best throw of 167-8.
ANDREW COBOURN — Chico State, 2012 Douglas graduate: Cobourn placed second in the men’s 5,000 meters with a time of 15:10.66 at the Hornet Invitational.
OLIVIA ABBOTT — Chico State, 2015 Douglas graduate: Abbott ran for Chico State’s ninth-place 4×400 relay team (3:56.91) and also clocked a time of 1:00.81 in the women’s 400 meters at the Hornet Invitational.
JESSA GANSBERG — Chico State, 2014 Douglas graduate: Gansberg, a sophomore, went 15-9-3/4 in the women’s long jump at the Hornet Invitational.
BECKY GRABOW — University of Pacific, 2012 Sierra Lutheran graduate: Grabow ran 4:53.83 in the 1,500 meters at the Hornet Invitational.
AMBER TAYLOR — William Jessup University (Rocklin, Calif.), 2014 Douglas graduate: Taylor, a sophomore, ran 5:27.36 in the 1,500 at the Hornet Invitational.
