Football: Coleville picks up big win over Pyramid Lake
The Coleville football team opened the 2010 season with a 64-26 victory at home over Pyramid Lake.
Senior splitend Emmi Sandoval scored four touchdowns in the first quarter to help the Wolves take a commanding 40-0 lead.
Sandoval caught two touchdown passes of 3 yds and 38 yds, ran for a 17-yard touchdown, and returned a punt 45 yards for his fourth score.
Junior quarterback Joshiah Huhta in his first career start did an admirable job replacing record-setting Jason Peters, who graduated and is now playing for Grinnell.
Huhta completed seven of 11 passes for 116 yards and four touchdowns without an interception.
“Before this spring we didn’t even know Josiah could throw a football,” Coleville coach Will Sandy said. “Josiah worked very hard over the summer to win the starting job and I am very happy with his progress.”
Buh Hamilton led the Coleville rushers with 72 yards on nine carries and scored on a 41-yard run in the second quarter.
Senior flanker Shane Parker made the most of his two receptions, scoring on both.
Mat Randall scored on a 10-yard run and also caught one pass on a conversion try.
Sandoval also led the Wolves defensively with 4 solo tackles, 10 assists, one sack, and one forced fumble.
Tyler Summers with 1 solo, 6 assists and a fumble recovery, Shane Parker with 1 solo and 8 assists, and Randall with 1 solo and 6 assists also had outstanding defensive efforts.
With the game getting out of hand early in the game Coleville’s younger players got their first action playing almost half of the game.
“Although they were physically outmatched by the huge Pyramid Lake players, our young guys played with courage and showed lots of improvement in for most of them was their first tackle football game, ” Sandy said, “With 11 freshmen and a number of other inexperienced players it was great to have a chance to give them so much playing time.
“I was especially impressed by the play of Nestor Gutierrez, Jacob Park, Seth Huhta, Nathan Hershey, and Jordan James.”
Coleville travels to Wells on Friday for a league contest that will begin at 10 a.m. The early start time is to accommodate the Elko County Fair.
