Ducks comeback falls short

Staff Reports

The Douglas Ducks 16U summer baseball team scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning and had the potential tying run at the plate Tuesday afternoon, only to see the comeback fall short as the Reno Athletics-Manogue Gold closed out a 9-6 victory.

Reno scored three runs in the first inning to take a lead it never relinquished. Douglas pulled to within 3-2 in the second inning, sparked by singles from Luke Ackermann and Tre Pimental, plus Chris Thacker’s sacrifice fly.

The Ducks added one run in the third inning when Gage Hoyle doubled and scored on Nathaniel Samaro’s single. The Ducks scored another run in the fourth when Dylan Lee tripled and Pimental followed with an RBI ground out to second base.

The Ducks threatened again in the seventh. Aiden Budden was hit by a pitch and Adam Garren drew a walk then Austin Sullivan followed with a one-out single to right field that drove two runs home. Matthew Goff walked, however, both runners were left stranded as the Athletics closed out the game on a strikeout and groundout.

Sullivan and Ackermann hit 2-for-4 and 2-for-3 respectively. Thacker also hit a fifth-inning double.
