Jerome Jim scored 14 points and Yancy Burtt and Russell Pedrett each finished with 10 points as the Douglas JV boys defeated the Manogue Miners, 55-52, Thursday at DHS.

The Tigers jumped out to a 13-5 lead after one quarter and then held off a late charge by the Miners in the fourth quarter.

“For the most part, we were patient and played our game,” Douglas coach Phil Emm said. “We rebounded much better and we gave ourselves opportunities.

“This was a good game for us. I think it gives us a boost going into the tournament.”

The Tigers will play in the State Farm Tournament next week in Reno.

Ryan Waffird scored six points in the win over Manogue. Craig Bell scored five points and Greg Gadsby scored four.

A slow start cost the Douglas junior varsity girls’ basketball team a chance to beat the Manogue JV on Thursday in the DHS gym.

The Miners took a 20-8 lead into the locker room at halftime and then held off two Tigers runs in the second half to secure the 34-26 victory.

Douglas used a 7-0 run at the end of the third quarter to cut a 14-point Manogue lead in half.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Tigers got within five points as Michelle Paterson and Rachel Frakes hit back-to-back layups, but the Miners made four of six free throws in the final minute to end the comeback.
