Douglas inline hockey beats McQueen
Jarred Van Bruggen scored three goals in the final period as the Douglas varsity inline hockey club beat McQueen, 7-3, Tuesday in a Nevada High School Hockey Association game at the Pony Express Pavilion (Mills Park) in Carson City.
Douglas, 5-2 in league and tied for third place, will face Wooster on Saturday at 6:40 p.m. at the High Sierra Hockey House in Reno. The junior varsity Tigers will face Carson City at 3:10 p.m.
Chris Martin opened the Tigers’ scoring with an unassisted goal with 7:30 left in the first period. Goalie Dave Boyer shut out the Lancers through two periods as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the second half.
Mario Quiroga gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead with a goal early in the third period. McQueen scored its first goal with 9:42 left in the period against Shawn Maxey, the Tigers’ second-half goalie.
Greg Rowe scored with 7:41 left to give Douglas a 3-1 lead. McQueen scored a short-handed goal to cut the lead again to one goal, but Brian Dries scored with 4:31 left. Douglas led 4-2 after three periods.
Douglas started the fourth period with a penalty, but Van Bruggen scored a short-handed goal with 11:25 remaining in the game to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead. Van Bruggen scored an unassisted goal again one minute later to push the lead to four.
McQueen scored to pull within 6-3 with 4:57 to go, but Van Bruggen scored his third goal off a pass from Dries with 4:03 to put the game on ice.
