Douglas Hockey improves record to 4-0
The Douglas High varsity hockey squad extended its undefeated season last weekend by posting two more wins in a doubleheader to give the Tigers a 4-0 record.
Juniors Drew Van Alyne and Jason Giesler and senior captain Josh Van Bruggen each had three points as Douglas defeated the Elko Indians in a heart stopper in the first game.
Douglas scored its first of three goals in as many minutes at 13:45 on a shot by Van Alyne, assisted by Van Bruggen. Giesler and Brandon Shupe paired up for a second Douglas goal as Giesler scored on a quick wrist shot. Senior alternate captain Andrew Hines gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead on an assisted goal from Van Alyne.
After Elko came back to tie 3-3, Van Bruggen scored a fourth goal for Douglas on another assist from Van Alyne, giving the Tigers a 4-3 lead. With just 37 seconds remaining in the first half, Elko scored its fourth goal, giving the Indians a 4-4 tie going into the second half.
Elko continued its momentum into the second half, scoring first at 17:14 for a 5-4 lead.
Douglas tied the game, 5-5, at 4:45 remaining, on a second goal by Giesler with an assist from Hines. As time wound down in the second half, Douglas played a power line consisting of senior Mike Davis, Van Bruggen, Hines and Giesler. With just 11 seconds remaining on the game clock, Giesler passed over to Van Bruggen, who scored on a long wrist shot to give the Tigers the winning goal.
In their second game against the Wooster colts, Douglas coasted to a 19-5 victory. Hines led all Tiger scorers with eight goals. Van Bruggen added six goals to the Tiger tally. Davis had a hat trick, scoring three goals. Shupe also scored three points, assisting on three Tiger goals.
Due to a couple of absent varsity players, JV sophomore Paul Mileo was called up for the doubleheader, adding some additional strength to the varsity squad.
In junior varsity action, Douglas evened its record at 1-1 with a convincing 8-2 win over the Elko JV squad. Junior Chris Lee scored a hat trick and one assist to lead the Tigers. Senior Bret Dixon had two assists. Michael Trute also added to the Tiger score with a goal and an assist.
The Douglas varsity plays its next game against McQueen on Jan. 4 at the Hockey House in Reno at 7 p.m. The JV squad continues its season on Jan. 6 against Elko at 4 p.m at the Carson City Pony Express Pavilion.
An alumni game is being planned to play against the current Douglas High varsity squad. All former Douglas High varsity players are invited to participate. A tentative date of Dec. 30 has been scheduled. Call 267-4792 for further details regarding location and time.
