Douglas cross country opens
The Douglas High School cross country teams opened the season with two meets over the weekend.
The Tigers competed in the Galena Invitational on Friday at the high school and at the Oakmont Invitational Saturday at Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif.
Luke Rachal and Jeff Colum finished with times of 18:49 and 20:48, respectively, in the senior race Friday over the 5,000 meter layout.
Jayson Scheetz (18:15) placed in the top five while Andy Patrick (18:40) and Bryan Sullivan (18:42) finished near the top 10 in the junior race. Jeremy Chandler (19:11) and Bud Nollet (21:35) also competed. Jared Peterson (19:10, top 10) was the Tigers’ lone competitor in the sophomore race.
On the girls side, Kathleen McSweeney (20:05), Kelly Mogab (20:44) and Annie Gastelum (21:21) placed second, third and fifth, respectively, in the junior race. Christine Fugate finished with a time of 30:29.
Sophomores Melissa Riley (25:35) and Kim Smith (27:21) and freshman Chelsea Rowe (19:51 over 2.5 miles) also competed.
The meet consisted of many Northern 4A league teams and a few other smaller classification schools.
The varsity boys team placed eighth at Oakmont. Scheetz (18:13) finished 32nd and Luke Rachal (18:24) finished 41st in the 216-runner field. Patrick (58th, 18:49), Chandler (66th, 19:07), Peterson (72nd, 19:16), Sullivan (74th, 19:17) and Jeff Colum (128th, 20:22) rounded out the varsity squad.
McSweeney (15th, 20:48), Gastelum (26th, 21:25) and Mogab (28th, 21:39) all earned awards for finishing in the top 10 percent of the girls varsity race. Melissa Feddich (60th, 23:22), Jenelle Timmons (88th, 24:28) and Melissa Reily (130th, 26:27) helped the Tigers to a sixth-place finish. More than 170 runners started.
