Douglas 3rd at Sparks tourney
Matt Wilcks, Nathan Bennett, David Tingle and Romaine Smokey each finished second in his weight bracket Saturday to help the Douglas Tigers to a third-place finish at the Sparks Invitational.
Carson High, in what may have been a break-out event for the Senators, won the tournament with 179 points. Sparks High was second with 160 points and Douglas took third place with 158 points.
Wilcks, a first-year varsity wrestler who won the 215-pound JV zone title last year, continued a solid senior season with his silver-medal performance at 215 pounds in Sparks.
Bennett finished second at 171 pounds at the Railroaders tournament.
The Douglas junior entered the Sparks tournament with two individual titles to his credit already this season. Bennett won the 171-pound championship at the Lowry Invitational in Winnemucca in December. He also won his weight bracket last weekend at the Carson Valley Lions Club Invitational at DHS, where he picked up the Outstanding Upper Weight Wrestler Award.
Tingle also was coming off a victory at the Carson Valley Lions Club Invitational. He turned in another strong showing to finish second at 145 pounds in Sparks.
Smokey, too, recorded his second-consecutive second-place finish when he earned the silver medal at 125 pounds in Sparks. The senior was second in his bracket at the Carson Valley Lions Club Invitational last weekend. He won the gold medal at 125 pounds at the Lowry Invitational earlier this season.
Douglas junior D’Art Johnson finished third at 140 pounds.
Senior John Hillenbrand was fifth at 189 pounds and Tiger freshman Matt Yaquinto took fifth place at 103 pounds.
Allen Anderson (112 pounds) and Chris Bautista (119 pounds) each turned in sixth-place finishes for the Tigers.
