Doubles play key for Tigers in Galena win

Kindel Isham and Spencer Trivitt combined to sweep their three doubles sets, one on a tie-breaker, to help the Douglas High boys tennis team pick off a 10-8 win at home against Galena Tuesday afternoon.

Douglas improved to 4-6 by winning its second straight match. The Tigers were tied for eighth-place with McQueen in the Northern 4A standings, however, they needed to finish their regular season with a win at Carson Thursday to have a shot at qualifying for the playoffs. McQueen owns the tie-breaker with its 12-6 win over Douglas on Aug. 25.

Isham and Trivitt, who are playing tennis for the first time this season, outlasted the Galena team of Spencer Karam-Brandon Scheid to earn a second-round 7-6 win (9-7 on the tie-breaker. The senior duo won two other sets, 6-1 and 6-2, and now boast a 14-9 season record.

Range Chapman and Zach Unger edged Galena’s Preston White-Dexter Witmer on a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-2). Dylan Berke and Josh Brown collected the Tigers’ final four team points as they each won two of three singles sets. Galena’s Christian Hess (22-1 season record) bested Berke, 6-3, and Brown, 6-1.

Douglas also defeated Wooster, 12-6, in a match that started on Thursday and was completed Monday after a rain delay. Blake Harper was 2-0 in singles, including a tie-breaker win, 6-6 (7-5).
