Dolfins turn in outstanding performances
Members of the Douglas Dolfins youth swimming program turned in some outstanding performances last week at the Early Spring Invitational in Reno.
Melissa Oglesby, age 10, and Andy Sturgess, 12, swam to seven personal-best times in the meet. Sturgess also set one new AA mark (in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:13.15) and achieved one new Q-time standard (50 backstroke, 34.68 seconds).
Scott Cronk improved his times in six events and set new AA times in the 100 butterfly (1:11.28) , 50 freestyle (28.52) and 100 individual medley (1:12.36). Adrian Radimaker also improved in six events.
Katie O’Neill, Joy Calebaugh and Kelda Gehrig improved in five events; Hillary Brower, Chris Romanowitz and Whitney Simpson improved in four events; and Robert Coomes, Patrick Gehrig, Allyson Michaud, Trevor Nenzel and Natalie Romanowitz improved in three events.
Michelle Nenzel swam two improved times and achieved one new A mark (50 backstroke, 42.09) and Beth Coomes swam personal-best times in two events.
Other Dolfins who performed well were Sara Altemara, Jonathan Rigdon and David Sturgess, who was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay in the 11-12 age group.
All in all, Dolfin swimmers improved in 49.6 percent of their races. The 11-12 age group boys improved in 19-of-25 races (76 percent), the 9-10 girls improved in 23-of-36 races (63.8 percent) and the 8-and-under girls improved in 12-of-23 races (52.1 percent).
Next up for the Dolfins will be the Far Westerns.
Elliott Kolbe (17-18 age group) will compete in the 100 and 200 events of each stroke and the 50 freestyle. Andy Sturgess (11-12) will compete in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 50 backstroke, while Patrick Gehrig will compete in the 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley.
Sturgess, Gehrig, Cronk and Coomes will make up the boys 200 freestyle relay in the 11-12 age division.
