The Douglas High School All Sports Boosters appointed their board for the 2006-07 school year recently.

Officers are: President Samantha Thurm, Vice President Terrie Thomas-Mrnak, Secretary Michelle Robertson, Treasurer Steve Morgan, membership co-chairmen Leanne Emm and Janie Lowe and apparel/merchandise co-chairmen Debbie McFadden and Sandy Wartgow.

The All Sports Boosters are open to everyone in the community and parents of athletes and cheerleaders.

They will be taking membership at Douglas High’s fall clearance night on June 5. The next open membership meeting is June 12 at 7 p.m. in the Douglas High commons.

Additional meetings will be held throughout the year on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m.

Skateboard competition coming up

The Street Jam street-style skateboard competition, slated for June 11 at Herbig Park across from Lampe Park during Carson Valley Days, will benefit the proposed Boys & Girls Club of Carson Valley.

Judges from 702 Skate Shop have been lined up for the event, but donations are still being sought.

Bill Jaskar, who has been organizing the competition for about two months, said he is hoping for about 100 participants and estimates the audience for the event will be around 500 total, considering the Carson Valley Days crowd.

His goal is to raise $25,000 for the proposed club.

All sponsorships of $100 and up will receive a logo or name on the event T-shirt. Contributions of $1,000 or more will receive a banner at the event.

Jaskar said Kirkwood, the Marine Corps and Shawn Cook from 702 Skate Shop are already strong backers of the event. The Resort Sports Network from Lake Tahoe will most likely be filming the competition.

Registration for the competition will open up in early May.

Fall sports clearance night

A clearance night for all fall sports at Douglas High School has been scheduled for June 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Douglas High School commons.

The mandatory extra-curricular drug policy presentation is at 7:15 p.m. The athlete, along with at least one of their parent/legal guardians must attend the presentation.

Athletes, parents and legal guardians not at the presentation will not be able to try out for fall sports.

If the athlete and the parent or legal guardian has already attended the presentation, they do not have to attend it again.

Free physicals will be available from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on campus during clearance night. Completed paperwork is required for the physical. A representative will be on hand to sell ASB stickers. The price of stickers for next year’s ninth graders is $20. Sophomores through seniors will be charged $25.

Athletes are required to undergo physicals every two years (freshman and junior year or first and third year of participation with an athletic team).

The clearance night has been scheduled to accommodate those athletes planning to play a sport in the fall of 2006, however any students planning on participating in a sport during the 2006-07 school year are encouraged to attend.

All paperwork must be filled out completely in order for a student-athlete to be cleared. No partial packets will be accepted.

Pop Warner sign-ups open

Sign-ups for the 2006 Pop Warner football and cheerleading season are open.

Divisions include Tiny Mite (5-7-year-olds, 35-75 pounds), Mitey Mite (7-9, 45-90), Junior Pee Wee (8-10, 55-100 or 11, 55-80), Pee Wee (9-11, 70-115 or 12, 70-95), Junior Midget (10-12, 80-130 or 13, 80-105) and Midget (11-14, 95-150 or 15, 95-130).

Cost is $125 per football player with $20 for each additional family member. For cheerleading the cost is $60 per cheerleader plus a $210 fee for cheer uniforms, sweats and shoes.

All fees go up $25 after June 1.

A parent or guardian must be present for all athletes and a certified state-issued birth certificate, a 2005-06 year-end report card and current weight for the football player must be provided.

All sign-ups are at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Dates include May 22 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and June 12 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Fishing Derby registration open

The 17th annual Kids’ Fishing Derby is set for June 3 and 4 at Lampe Park in Gardnerville.

Registration tickets for the free event are available at the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department, located at 1327 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville.

There are seven sessions available for tickets: 8 to 9:30 a.m., 10 to 11:30 a.m., 12:30 to 2 p.m., and a special needs session Saturday June 3 from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Tickets are free but children must be pre-registered. Registration ends June 2.

About 2,400 children ages 3-12 are expected at the two-day event. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old or older. The derby needs about 300 to 400 volunteers to make it a successful and fun derby for all.

The volunteers help with everything from setting up the park prior to the derby, helping plant the fish in the stream, serving refreshments, weighing fish, cleaning fish, taking tickets, registering volunteers and providing information, handing out prizes, netting fish, removing hooks from the fish and distributing loaner poles to any children who do not have anything to fish with.

All volunteers must be pre-registered and attend a volunteer meeting on either May 20 at 9 a.m. or May 31 at 6 p.m. at Lampe Park.

The derby board and committee members will tag 300 prize fish May 13 at Mason Valley Fish and Game located in Mason Valley. The board will be planting fish from Mason Valley, Susanville and the Lahontan hatchery in the stream at Lampe Park on May 31.

AYSO sign-ups

Sign-ups for Carson Valley AYSO are open to boys and girls between 4 and 18 years old. The season runs from the beginning of August to the middle of October.

Birth certificates must be presented for all players who did not play last year.

Cost for registration is $75 per player.

The final registration date is May 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Douglas High School commons.

MEFIYI awards coming up

The second annual MEFIYI Community Choice awards banquet honoring the outstanding youth of Douglas County is scheduled for May 31 at the St. Gall Pastoral Center. The awards are organized through a grant funded by NFL Charities.

Proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Carson Valley.
