DHS tennis teams open season with road wins
The Douglas tennis teams opened the season with victories.
The Douglas boys team beat Sparks 18.5-4 Tuesday while the girls team beat Sparks 12.5-10 Tuesday on the road and Reed 15.5-7 Thursday at Lampe Park.
Roger Spranz, a transfer student from Germany, won his three singles matches by scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0 for the boys.
Brian Solomon, who lost his first two sets, won his third match. Robert Harris also won a set.
Douglas’ No. 1 doubles team of Griff Sahlin and Jake Kallman, No. 2 doubles team of Ryan Niichel and Landon Smallwood, and No. 3 doubles team of Steve McCleod and Jason Murray all won three matches.
Douglas will play host to Galena on Tuesday at 3:30 at Lampe Park.
The Douglas girls team received three wins from freshman Amber Oglesby and two from Sara Sheldon in singles in a narrow win over the Railroaders. Oglesby won her sets by a combined score of 18-6.
In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Renee Pinnon and Katie Kent teamed up to win 2-of-3 matches. Erin Crandall and Jessica Albrent also won two sets, and Christina Nelson and Linsey Willadson won their last match.
Against Reed, Sheldon won three sets, Oglesby two, and Kent and Pinnon two. Jill Little and Krissy Thornhill won both of their matches.
Douglas will plat at Galena on Tuesday before playing host to Reno on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Lampe Park.
