DHS student, coach honored
Douglas High School senior Rebecca Goodspeed and athletic coach Ellen Lucas were honored last week in recognition of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
The National Girls and Women in Sports Day, as proclaimed by Governor Bob Miller, was Feb. 5. The day calls attention to the positive influence sports participation has on females and also provides an opportunity to celebrate the history of women’s athletic achievements. The top senior athlete at each school in Nevada, along with the top four athletic administrators or coaches in the state, were recognized.
Goodspeed is a straight A student and all-league performer in volleyball and softball. Lucas is a long time cross country and track and field coach at Douglas and teacher in the area. “There are no limits” was the theme for this year’s event.
The NGWSD is a nationwide event staged once a year. Athletes and administrators or coaches are selected according to their accomplishments both in the classroom and on the athletic field, particularly during their senior year.
Dayton High athletic director Jeanne Utterback was the state’s coordinator for the event this year.
Goodspeed and Lucas were nominated for recognition by Douglas High athletic director Steve Wilcox.
