DHS girls are victorious at Sparks
Next stop: Las Vegas.
The Douglas High School softball team – facing elimination in the northern 4A zone tournament in its final at-bat – rallied for three runs and defeated Reno 3-2 Friday.
The victory at Shadow Mountain Sports Complex in Sparks earned the Tigers a trip to the state tournament in Las Vegas next weekend.
Jennifer McCrosky had the big hit in the top of the seventh with a two-run triple that scored Tarrah Kizer and Jodi Gonzales.
Jeannette Holt followed with an RBI single that scored McCrosky with the eventual game-winning run.
“I was thinking I had to do it, that was all I knew,” McCrosky said of her final at-bat. “I knew we could make our way back. We’re a strong team. It was a total team effort. We have so much heart.”
First-year head coach Ken Carr was obviously pleased to see his team rally for the victory.
“The bottom of our order really came through,” he said of McCrosky and Holt, the number 8 and 9 hitters Friday. “The kids came through when it really counted. We were down to the last three outs of our season.”
