Denny finishes strong at NFR

Wyatt Denny of Minden reflects on a trail that led to his qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo on Dec. 1-10 in Las Vegas.

Minden's Wyatt Denny closed out a successful ride at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo with a pair of second-place performances in the bareback riding competition this past weekend in Las Vegas.

Denny, 21, rode to a score of 88.0 that was just one-half point out of the lead on Saturday night. He also turned in an 87.0 on Friday, which stood as the top score until Tanner Aus came through with an 88.5 on the last ride at Thomas & Mack Center.

Denny earned $20,731 each night and wound up with $82,065 overall during the 10-round NFR. He finished 10th in the final PRCA world standings with $148,862 in winnings during the 2016-17 season.

On Dec. 1, he started the NFR standing No. 15 in the world bareback riding.

This caps off a highly successful 2016 in which Denny won the bareback riding at the National College Finals Rodeo this past summer. He was last year's Rookie of the Year in bareback riding and finished the season in 28th place with nearly $40,000 in earnings.

Clayton Biglow of Clements, Calif, — Denny's training partner and bareback runner-up this summer at the National College Finals Rodeo – finished seventh in the world standings. Biglow is celebrating his 21st birthday on Sunday.
