Denny 2nd at nationals
Minden resident Wyatt Denny had a banner weekend at the 64th annual National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyo.
Denny tied for second-place in bareback riding. Denny finished with 210 points to tie Dylan Wahlert of LaJunta, Colo., while Casey Meroshnekoff of Red Bluff, Calif., won with 224 points.
Denny placed second in the short go when he posted a score of 74. His first-round score of 75 was good enough to take an early lead in the event.
Denny also finished seventh in the All-Around Cowboy standings with 695 points.
Ashley Martinkus, a Douglas Rodeo Club member who lives in Washoe Valley, also finished sixth in girls cutting with 644 points — 1.5 out of fourth-place and 22 points out of the lead. Martinkus was sixth in the short go with 213 points.
A mere fraction of a second was the difference on Saturday night when Fallon’s Rachel Hendrix finished fourth in barrel racing.
Hendrix, who is heading into her senior year at Churchill County, finished with a combined time of 52.546 seconds for three runs. She placed fourth in the short go Saturday night with a time of 17.387 at the Sweetwater Events Center.
Vanessa Leggett of Kamloops, B.C., emerged as the champion with a combined time of 52.290 — less than three-tenths of a second ahead of Hendrix. Chelsie Stodghill of Pine, Ariz., was second in 52.476 and Blaise Bercegeay of Summit, Miss., was third in 52.539.
Hendrix also finished sixth in the All-Around Cowgirl standings with 610 points.
Nevada produced the national team roping champion as Morgan McVay of Sparks and Bradin Porter of Spring Creek clocked a combined time of 21.9 to win by nearly two seconds.
Nevada finished sixth in the team standings with 4,642 points. The week-long event attracted nearly 1,500 competitors from 36 states as well as Canada and Australia.
