Dave Roberts to speak at Dolan Baseball Dinner
The University of Nevada baseball team will hold the 33rd annual Bobby Dolan Baseball Dinner on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017 at the Reno Ballroom. The guest speaker is Dave Roberts, manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers and 2016 National League Manager of the Year.
The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the VIP reception, followed by a 5:30 p.m. social hour and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $150 per person and $1,500 for a table of 10. Additionally, a VIP package for a table of 10 including a private reception with Dave Roberts is available for $2,500. Roberts, who was also named the Sporting News’ Manager of the Year, led the Dodgers to a 91-71 record and the team’s fourth consecutive National League West Division title in his first season leading the team in 2016. He is the 10th skipper in Los Angeles Dodgers history and the fourth to play for and manage the team. Roberts is the first minority manager in club history.
A veteran of 10 major league seasons he debuted with the Cleveland Indians on Aug. 7, 1999. In addition to playing three seasons for the Indians he played for the Dodgers (2002-04), Red Sox (2004), Padres (2005-06) and Giants (2007-08).
The Dolan Baseball Dinner raises funds that support the Wolf Pack baseball team. The Pack will be led by second-year head coach T.J. Bruce this season. In Bruce’s first year Nevada went 37-24 and advanced the Mountain West Championship game.
Winterfest opens at
Greater Nevada Field
WinterFest — a festive holiday attraction featuring a Christmas tree lot, a Christmas train ride and appearances from Santa Claus in “Santa’s Village” — has officially opened at Greater Nevada Field in Reno.
The tree lot is open from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. seven days a week. Tree prices start at $48.50 and run up to $151. Sales tax is included in the price and prices vary depending on the tree size.
The Christmas train and Santa appearances run from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, noon to 3 p.m. and 5 to 10 p.m. on Saturdays, and 3 to 7 p.m. on Sundays. The train ride prices are a flat rate of $8 for children and adults, with a reduced price of $5 for daytime rides (Noon to 3 p.m. on Saturdays; 3 to 5 p.m. on Sundays).

Note: The ice rink in front of Greater Nevada Field is now open. The cost is $8 for people 13 to 54, $6 for kids 3-12 and seniors 55 and up. The cost for skate rental is $4 per person.
Youth basketball sign-ups open
Registration is now being taken for the Douglas County Parks and Recreation youth boys and coed basketball league season.
Players from first grade through high school — beginning to advanced levels — can participate in a program that emphasizes skill development and fun competition. Participants will be assigned to teams through a draft system. Games will be played one day each week with at least one practice each week.
The season will extend from Jan. 10 through March 27.
The cost of $80 ($90 after Dec. 15) includes T-shirt, awards and officials. A parent permission form must be completed at the time of registration.

Adult winter volleyball registration under way
Registration is underway for the Douglas County Parks and Recreation adult winter volleyball league season.
Women’s and coed B 6-on-6 leagues are being offered. The early registration period will remain open until Dec. 23, when a fee of $200 per team will be charged ($250 after that date). The registration deadline is Jan. 4.
Players must be at least 18 years old to participate. All registration is based on first-come, first-serve basis. Twelve players are allowed on a roster.
Adult flag football registration starts
Registration is under way for the Douglas County Parks and Recreation adult flag football league season.
The early registration period is open until Dec. 23, when a fee of $480 per team will be charged ($530 after that date). The season is due to kick off on Jan. 22. A managers meeting will be held Jan. 11 at 5:30 p.m.
The league is for players 18 years of age and over. All registration is based on first-come, first-serve basis. Fifteen players are allowed to a roster. Each team will play a minimum of eight regular season games.
