Danner Hillman wins mountain bike gold
Young Danner Hillman has had a busy debut season riding for the Alta Alpina Cycling Club.
Hillman, 16, has won no less than three events since May and competed in two national events on the road and trails since joining the Alta Alpina program this spring.
The Douglas High School junior’s highlight came at the USA Cycling Mountain Bike Nationals on July 5-19 at Mammoth Lakes, Calif., where he won a gold medal in the Junior Men’s (17-18 year olds) Category 3 cross country race. He completed the three-lap course —5.46 miles with a 1,032-foot vertical climb for each of those laps — in a time of 1 hour, 21 minutes, 36 seconds. He took first-place in the class by a margin of more than four minutes.
The base elevation for the event at Mammoth was 8,329 feet.
The 6-foot, 140-pound Hillman logged first-place cross country finishes at the Peavine Challenge in June and the Pine Nut Cracker in May. In addition to that, he took fourth-place in the Junior Men’s 15-18 Category 4/5 race on June 21 at the 55th annual Nevada City Bicycle Classic (Nevada City, Calif.) and placed third in the 17-18 age group at the Mighty Tour de Nez in Reno.
He also competed at the USAC Nationals Road Time Trials on June 26 in Loyalton, Calif.
Hillman is a three-sport athlete at Douglas High, where he competes in alpine skiing, cross country as well as track and field. The Tigers’ open their fall cross country season next Friday when the Douglas Class Races are held at Lampe Park.
