Carson Valley U14 soccer team wins tournament
The Carson Futbol Club’s Sporting Carson Valley U14 girls team ended its spring season on a high note by winning at the Independence Cup in Sacramento June 27-28.
After going undefeated in three White Bracket pool play games, Sporting Carson Valley finished the tournament by beating the host American River FC Freedom ‘02 team in a shootout (officially, a 1-0 win).
“Any time a Nevada team goes over to California and brings back a cup, it’s a good thing,” said coach Mark Sando. “Our girls played their hearts out in 95-degree conditions and didn’t let up until the final penalty shot (of the opposing team) was blocked. I could not have been prouder of their effort. They definitely saved their best for last.”
Earlier, Sporting Carson Valley also posted shutout victories against Union Sacramento FC, 1-0, the Roseville Arsenal, 1-0, and CAPFC United, 3-0.
The team was able to overcome some adversity on its way to the championship.
“One of our best defenders was injured on Saturday, so we were down to just two on the bench,” Sando said. “And we deliberately did not have any guest players so that we could assess just where our players were. I guess we found out.”
