Fishing clinic

The Nevada Division of Wildlife is sponsoring a fly tying and casting clinic Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the NDOW headquarters, located at 1100 Valley Road in Reno.

The clinic is geared for entry-level fly anglers who would like to learn the basics of fly tying Wooly Worm and Wooly Bugger artificial flies and three basic casting techniques.

The clinic is free, but participants must be at least 10 years of age. Materials and vices will be provided for this introductory class. Some fly rods and reels will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

All comers track meet

The South Tahoe High School track and field team will host an all comers meet April 18 at South Tahoe Middle School.

Cost is $3 per person for an unlimited number of events. There will be three divisions: Middle School (5th through 8th grades), High School (9th through 12th grades) and Open (ages 18 and older). All proceeds benefit the STHS program.

Field events begin at 10 a.m. with the long jump, high jump and shot put. Athletes competing in these events will be asked to measure their own marks (tapes will be provided).

Running events start at 11 a.m. with the 110 high/100/80 hurdles, 100 meter dash, 1,600, 400 relay, 400, 800, 200 and 1,600 relay.

Fishing derby

The Lovelock Lions and Eagles clubs will host their third annual Rye Patch Reservoir Fishing Derby on May 16 and 17.

More than $65,000 for tagged fish and $4,200 in cash drawings will be available for prizes and awards. The tagged fish will be rainbow trout.

Entry fee is $50 per person. Registration closes May 14. For more information, write to the Lions Club at P.O. Box 21, Lovelock, 89419.

Soccer sign-ups

Sign-ups for the Carson Valley-based American Youth Soccer Organization will take place on four dates over the next three months.

Early-bird registration sessions will take place April 20 (6 to 8 p.m. at Gardnerville Elementary School), May 9 (1 to 3 p.m. at GES) and May 20 (6 to 8 p.m. at Pinon), and a regular (last-day) registration session will take place June 4 (6 to 7:30 p.m. at GES).

Players must be between the ages of 5 and 18 by Aug. 1. First-time players will need to take a birth certificate.

Cost is $45 per player or $110 per family of three or more during the early-bird sessions and $50 per person or $120 per family on the last-day session. For more information or to volunteer to be a board member, coach or referee, call the AYSO at 586-2641.

The fourth annual Fly Fishing Festival, sponsored by the High Sierra Fly Casters and the Carson Valley Inn, will be held Sunday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the CVI’s lower level.

The purpose of the event is to introduce newcomers to the sport and promote fly fishing.

Cost is $5 per person (children under the age of 16 get in free). Family memberships into the HSFC at a cost of $25 will also be available. The family membership includes one club hat or T-shirt and family entry into the festival.

Door prizes will be distributed, a raffle will be held and a silent auction will be offered.

Softball tournament

The DCPRD will hold a Men’s D-level slowpitch softball tournament April 25 and 26 at Lampe Park.

Entry fee is $170 per team plus $15 for American Softball Association registration.

The format is double elimination.

Sponsor awards will be given to the top four teams. Individual awards will be given to players on the top two teams.

A Most Valuable Player award will also be given.
