Basketball: Freshman Lady Tigers win State Farm Tournament
The Douglas High freshman girls’ basketball team is off to a 13-1 start on the year and has compiled a 4-0 record in league play through the month of December.
The Lady Tigers are also riding a nine-game win streak that includes winning the State Farm Holiday Tournament in Reno last week.
Douglas opened the tournament with a decisive 53-25 win over Reno High, which avenged the Tigers’only blemish on their record from earlier in the month.
“The girls were really motivated for the Reno game and played extremely hard,” Douglas coach Steve Walsh said. “They wanted to send the message that none of us though we should have lost that earlier game.”
The first time around against Reno, Douglas was playing its fifth game in as many days.
“Our conditioning wasn’t quite where it needed to be,” Walsh said. “In the second meeting, the girls were ready and dominated from beginning to end.”
The Tigers played very well throughout the tournament with big wins over Damonte Ranch and then Spanish Springs in the semifinals.
That set up the championship game against Carson, which has been equally dominant this season. The two teams battled to a 13-13 tie at halftime after an up-tempo and defensive first half.
In the second half, the Tigers made a couple key defensive adjustments and jumped out to an eight-point lead by the end of third first quarter. The Tigers remained strong on the defensive side and cruised to a 34-29 win for the championship.
Leonna Mortimer was named tournament MVP and Mackinzie Maiden and Mandy Weaver were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts.
Up next for the Tigers will again be Carson Wednesday afternoon in the first of two league meetings this season.
