Student play opens Friday
Sherlock Holmes is on the case for the Douglas High Drama Club’s production of “Sherlock Holmes: A Simple Act of War,” written and directed by Carson Costa and Kelsey Endter.
The play opens Friday and runs for two weekends.
“We both love Sherlock Holmes, the books, the BBC show, the American show, and the movies,” Carson said. “Kelsey was inspired by World War II, and we’re both in the drama program, and have wanted to write and direct a play for awhile.”
The play takes place in London in the midst of the Blitz, the bombing of England by Germany during World War II. When a member of parliament is killed, only Sherlock Holmes can uncover the secrets of his past, and the plan of a criminal mastermind who has the fate of the world in his hands.
“With beloved, classic characters, plenty of action, an intellectual style, and endless comedic relief, this is a show you will not want to miss,” Carson said.
The play will be Carson’s directing debut, and although they only have a month of rehearsal time, she is impressed with the cast.
“We have a great cast whose responsive to all our suggestions. I’m so impressed by how quickly they picked this up,” Carson said. “There’s only one senior in our main cast, so it’s all newer talent, and we’ve been blown away by all the talent they do have. It’s a taste of what’s to come next year.”
Proceeds from the show will help send 24 drama students to the State Thespian Festival on March 14-17 in Las Vegas.
“It’s a great show, and we’ve put a lot of work into it,” Carson said.
“Sherlock Holmes: A Simple Act of War” shows 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and March 8-9, and 4 p.m. Sunday and March 9-10 in the Douglas High drama room 101.
Tickets are $5 in advance from any drama student. At the door tickets are $7 general admission and $5 for students and seniors.
