Spirit of the West
I applaud Editor Sheila Gardner’s poignant column on Question 2 (same-sex marriages) and commend The Record-Courier for publishing it (R-C Oct. 14.
I felt initially alarmed when I drove past my first “Protect Marriage” sign, urging me to vote Yes on 2. “You’ve got to be kidding,” I muttered out loud in my car. I never thought they would get enough signatures for a ballot measure. I began to take inventory of the number of homes displaying the “Vote Yes” signs and realized they were not blanketing the community. Maybe there was hope.
Marriage is an honorable and challenging undertaking, especially in a world where there are so many real threats that can tear couples apart.
I have the utmost respect for any two individuals who willingly commit themselves to one another, regardless of race, creed, color, national origin or gender. After all, isn’t that the true spirit of the American West, freedom?
